Penemuan itu, yang dipaparkan pada Senin (3 Desember) dalam pertemuan tahunan American Geophysical Union, menunjukkan bahwa betapa rentannya kehidupan masyarakat terhadap perubahan iklim, termasuk perubahan yang juga disebabkan oleh manusia.

IBM's Sequoia has overtaken Fujitsu's K Computer to be named the world's fastest supercomputer.

The Sequoia, also known as the IBM BlueGene/Q system, is the first U.S. supercomputer since November 2009 to reach the top of the TOP500 list.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- The Arctic Ocean will be almost ice-free this summer for the first time in three decades, which scientists say will have some positive impacts on the region.

Measurements show the arctic had the least sea ice coverage in July ever recorded, CNN reported Saturday.

"This is just part and parcel of the decline that we've seen in the overall ice extent because the Arctic is warming up," said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say a new X-ray microscope can penetrate deep into materials and see details at the scale of a single nanometer, or one billionth of a meter.

Physicists at the University of California, San Diego, say the microscope doesn't use lenses but rather a powerful computer program to create its images.

The program, or algorithm, is able to convert the diffraction patterns resulting in the X-rays bouncing off the nanoscale structures of material into resolvable images, a UCSD release said Monday.

GREENBELT, Md., Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The tsunami from the March earthquake in Japan had impacts across the world, causing the calving of icebergs a hemisphere away in Antarctica, researchers say.

The finding is the first direct observation of such a connection between tsunamis and icebergs, a NASA release said Monday. Using multiple satellite images, NASA researchers were able to observe new icebergs floating off to sea shortly after the tsunami swell reached Antarctica.

Twenty-six countries ended up reporting approximately ten-thousand crop circles, in the last third of the 20th century, and 90% of those were located in southern England. Many of the formations appearing in that area are positioned near ancient monuments, such as Stonehenge.
